What Happens During Your

First Physiotherapy Visit

Your initial appointment typically includes several key steps that allow your physiotherapist to understand your condition and begin treatment.

1. Health History and Injury Discussion

Your physiotherapist will begin by asking questions about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and activities. This helps identify possible causes of your pain or injury.

2. Physical Assessment

Next, your physiotherapist will assess movement, strength, flexibility, posture, and joint mobility. This evaluation helps determine the source of your discomfort and how it affects your daily activities.

3. Diagnosis and Treatment Plan

Based on the assessment findings, your physiotherapist will explain the likely cause of your condition and outline a treatment plan designed to help restore mobility and reduce pain.

4. Initial Treatment

In many cases, treatment begins during the first visit. This may include therapeutic exercises, mobility techniques, or other physiotherapy interventions designed to support recovery.

5. Education

Your therapist will discuss the likely prognosis for recovery, activities you should avoid, how hard you are allowed to push the injury, and answer any other questions you may have.

How Long Does the First Appointment Take?

Your first physiotherapy visit typically lasts between 50 and 60 minutes. This allows enough time for a detailed assessment and to begin treatment as appropriate.

Do You Need a Referral to See a Physiotherapist?

In Saskatchewan, patients can book physiotherapy appointments without a doctor’s referral. However, some insurance providers require referrals for reimbursement.

If you are unsure whether your plan requires a referral, our clinic can help clarify before your appointment.

Will My Insurance Cover Physiotherapy?

Many extended health insurance plans include physiotherapy coverage. Flaman Physiotherapy supports direct billing for many providers when available.

Coverage details vary depending on your policy, yearly limits, and provider rules.

We provide assessment and treatment for a wide range of conditions.

First Visit Physiotherapy FAQs

  • What should I wear to my physiotherapy appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement and access to the area being treated. We can provide shorts and a gown to allow us to thoroughly examine areas that are injured, but you are welcome to bring your own appropriate clothing as well.

  • Will I receive treatment during the first visit?

In most cases, treatment begins during the first appointment after the assessment is completed. The initial treatment helps us confirm the findings of the assessment, so we consider it important to get started immediately.

  • How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on the injury, severity, and recovery goals. Your physiotherapist will discuss an estimated treatment plan.

  • Is physiotherapy painful?

Physiotherapy is designed to reduce pain and improve movement and physical performance. Some exercises may feel challenging but should not cause excessive discomfort. Your therapist will discuss what are reasonable and unreasonable levels of pain, including ways for you to monitor yourself to ensure you are pushing hard enough to get results and not so hard as to be counter-productive.
