Physiotherapy for Neck Pain and POSTURAL STRAIN

Neck pain is increasingly common, especially for people who spend long hours working at a desk, using computers, or looking at mobile devices.

Poor posture, repetitive strain, and prolonged sitting can place significant stress on the neck and upper spine.

In addition, whiplash type injuries remain prevalent among people who have been involved in motor vehicle accidents and sports injuries.

At Flaman Physiotherapy, we provide personalized physiotherapy treatment to relieve neck pain, improve posture, and restore comfortable movement regardless if it is from acute trauma or repetitive strain situations.

Our goal is to help patients return to work and daily activities without pain.

Common Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain can develop for many reasons, including sudden injury or long-term strain.

Common causes include poor desk posture, tech neck from phone and laptop use, muscle strain, whiplash injuries, herniated discs, sports injuries, and workplace strain.

Many patients experience neck pain due to prolonged sitting and poor workstation ergonomics.

Physiotherapy can help correct these underlying issues.

Symptoms of Neck Injuries

Neck injuries may present with several symptoms.

Common symptoms include neck stiffness, limited range of motion, pain when turning the head, headaches originating from the neck or base of the skull, shoulder and upper back tension, and tingling or numbness in arms or hands.

If these symptoms are affecting your comfort or productivity, physiotherapy can help restore proper movement.

How Physiotherapy Helps Neck Pain

Manual Therapy

Our physiotherapists provide skilled hands-on biomechanical treatment, using their knowledge of anatomy to improve joint mobility and muscle extensibility. Localizing the individual joints at fault, they will manually improve the joint mobility with focused and directed pressure to the affected area. Neck injuries often respond well to joint mobilisation, traction, and manual muscle release techniques.

Therapeutic Modalities

Our therapists utilize a variety of advanced modalities to enhance the effectiveness of their biomechanical techniques. Ultrasound and laser therapy for inflammation and swelling when it is present. TENS/EMS to desensitize an area and loosen tight muscle around the injured region. Acupuncture and Gunn IMS dry needling for pain relief and to restore normal motion to the affected area. Shockwave therapy to improve joint mobility and to reduce areas of calcified tendinosis where appropriate. Depending on the type of injury involved, all of these tools can be useful in relieving pain and swelling, restoring motion, and augmenting the effectiveness of the biomechancial techniques and exercises our therapists will treat you with.

Postural Training

Once injured, the neck can be extremely susceptible to re-aggravation from postures that previously did not cause you pain. Our therapists will help you identify positions that will aggravate your injury and come up with ways for you to work around them, helping prevent painful flare ups of your condition.

Mobility Exercises

Neck injuries are often characterized by significant stiffness and loss of mobility. A healthy neck has a large amount of motion available; our therapists will use their techniques along with providing you with specific exercises emphasizing non-painful ranges of motion to begin regaining your joint mobility. Your exercises will be tailored to you and your condition.

Strength Rehabilitation

Regaining mobility is only the first step. Strengthening the neck is essential for rehabilitation of your injury. Again, our therapists will provide you with specific exercises, tailored to your injury, to help you improve the condition of your neck muscles. We realize you don’t have unlimited time and we do not give 3 hours of exercises for one body part – reasonable exercises, reasonable repetitions, within a framework you agree is doable. Teamwork between you and your treatment team here is the key to success.

Workplace Injury Rehabilitation

If your neck injury is due to a workplace event, we can help with return to work programs and even help facilitate ergonomic assessments of your workplace to ensure you return in the safest manner possible.

Postural Dysfunction Rehabilitation

Modern work environments contribute significantly to neck pain.

Long hours at a desk can lead to forward head posture, rounded shoulders, upper back tension, and chronic neck stiffness.

Physiotherapy helps correct these issues through ergonomic education, movement training, and strengthening programs.
