Are You Experiencing Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms?

Heel and mid-foot pain can build gradually or appear suddenly, often interfering with walking, exercise, and daily routines.

You may be experiencing:

  • Sharp pain in the bottom of your heel
  • Pain with the first steps in the morning
  • Increased pain after standing or walking for long periods
  • Tightness in the foot or calf
  • Discomfort after activity rather than during

If left untreated, symptoms can worsen and impact your mobility.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia—a thick band of tissue supporting your arch—becomes irritated or inflamed.

Common causes include:

  • Overuse (running, walking, prolonged standing)
  • Poor footwear or lack of support
  • Tight calf muscles or limited ankle mobility
  • Sudden increases in activity
  • Biomechanical imbalances

Physiotherapy focuses on addressing both the inflammation and the underlying cause.

How We Treat Plantar Fasciitis at Flaman Physiotherapy

Plantar fasciitis may be a result of, or be causing, heel spurs, loss of motion in the ankle or calf muscle, or biomechanical mobility issues with the arch of the foot. It may also be secondary to direct trauma to the area. Your treatment will start with a full assessment of the area and the mobility of all associated areas. Based on this, we will design a treatment plan that focuses on your specific injury presentation.

Your treatment plan may include:

Manual Physical Therapy

  • Restoring joint mobility to the arch, the heel and any other areas that may be impacting the plantar fascia. This will help decrease the strain on the area.

Ultrasound Therapy

  • In cases where the foot may be painful or swollen, ultrasound can increase blood flow, desensitize the area, and help decrease local swelling.

Radial Shockwave Therapy

  • Shockwave has been shown to be effective in reducing size of heel spurs which often accompany plantar fasciitis. It is also used to assist in improving mobility of the soft tissues and joints of the foot and ankle

Low Level Laser Therapy

  • LLLT can help with pain in both the superficial and deep structures of the foot and ankle.

Graston Technique

  • Excessive scarring and tightness of the plantar fascia may respond to instrument assisted soft tissue release techniques in addition to the other methods of treatment.

Exercise and Strength Training

  • Specific exercises and stretches designed to help you restore normal mobility of the foot and ankle region will be provided.

Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

  • Excessive tightness of the deep intrinsic muscles of the foot can be alleviated with the assistance of Gunn IMS techniques.

Classical Acupuncture

  • Acupuncture may be used to assist in pain relief in chronic cases of plantar fasciitis.

These treatments are integrated into a personalized plan tailored to your recovery goals.

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment FAQs

  • How long does plantar fasciitis take to heal?

Recovery time varies, but many patients notice improvement within a few weeks of consistent treatment.

  • Is shockwave therapy effective for plantar fasciitis?

Yes, it is one of the most effective treatments for chronic cases, helping stimulate healing and reduce pain.

  • Should I keep walking with plantar fasciitis?

Staying active is important, but activity may need to be modified to avoid worsening symptoms.

  • Do I need orthotics?

In some cases, additional support can help, but treatment should also address strength and mobility.

  • Can plantar fasciitis go away on its own?

It can, but without treatment, it may take much longer and is more likely to return.
