Are You Experiencing Sciatica Symptoms?
Sciatica often presents as more than just back pain. It can affect daily work and home activities, quantity and quality of sleep, and even the ability to sit comfortably.
You may be experiencing:
- Sharp or burning pain radiating down the leg
- Numbness or tingling in the hip, leg, or foot
- Pain that worsens when sitting for long periods
- Weakness in the affected leg
- Difficulty standing, walking, or bending
If these symptoms sound familiar, targeted physiotherapy can help address the root cause.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve — the largest nerve in the body, running from your lower back through your hips and down each leg.
This irritation is often linked to:
- Disc bulges or herniation
- Muscle tightness or imbalances
- Poor posture or prolonged sitting
- Spinal joint dysfunction
Rather than just treating the pain, physiotherapy focuses on identifying and correcting the underlying issue.
How We Treat Sciatica at Flaman Physiotherapy
Every case of sciatica is different. Our approach is tailored to your condition, lifestyle, and recovery goals. Every client receives a full assessment to determine which body part(s) are causing the painful condition.
We then design a program to restore optimal motion and strength in the area, helping eliminate the root cause of the problem. Your treatment will be customized to your injury, and may include:
Biomechanical Assessment and Treatment
- Determination of the underlying condition causing the sciatic irritation, followed by direct hands-on manual therapy where appropriate, to improve joint mobility and restore normal motion.
Ultrasound/EMS
- Useful for joint sprains, localized swelling, and inflammation, ultrasound can improve the effectiveness of manual therapy techniques and reduce pain. TENS/EMS can be used to desensitize and loosen tight, painful muscles in the lower back, which may be contributing to back and leg pain. EMS and interferential stimulation may also be combined with needling techniques to hit the deeper musculature.
Radial Shockwave Therapy
- Shockwave can help improve joint and soft-tissue mobility and extensibility, as well as stimulate the body's natural tissue-healing response.
Low-Level Laser Therapy
- LLLT can help with pain and inflammation in the injured structures. It has also been shown to help with neurogenic/radicular pain syndromes.
Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)
- IMS needling can be used alone or in conjunction with electrical stimulation to loosen tight musculature and help normalize the neuromuscular system in the area.
Exercise and Strength Training
- Once the injured region is identified and mobility begins to improve, specific directed stretches and exercises to continue maximizing mobility and begin specifically strengthening around the injured structure will be provided. This will help stabilize the area, reducing pressure on the irritated nerve and reducing the likelihood of future sciatica episodes.
Graston Technique
- An instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization technique which can help with scar tissue adhesions and muscle tightness, which can cause or exacerbate the sciatic irritation.
Classical Acupuncture
- Acupuncture can be very effective in assisting with pain relief in the back and leg, which allows clients to perform their home exercises more effectively to maximize their rehabilitation.
Each treatment is available at our Saskatoon clinic and is integrated into your personalized recovery plan.

Sciatica Treatment FAQs
How long does sciatica take to heal?
Recovery time varies depending on the cause and severity. Many patients begin to see improvement within a few sessions, with continued progress over several weeks.
Do I need imaging before starting physiotherapy?
In most cases, no. A physiotherapy assessment can identify the likely cause and guide treatment without the need for imaging.
Is physiotherapy effective for sciatica?
Yes. Physiotherapy is one of the most effective ways to treat sciatica by reducing nerve irritation and correcting movement patterns.
What makes sciatica worse?
Prolonged sitting, poor posture, and lack of movement can increase symptoms. Targeted treatment helps reduce these triggers.
Can sciatica go away on its own?
Some cases improve over time, but without treatment, symptoms may return or worsen. Addressing the root cause is key to long-term relief.
