Ultrasound, TENS & EMS Therapy in Saskatoon
Flaman Physiotherapy provides a comprehensive range of rehabilitation services for your injury needs. These services include Ultrasound therapy, TENS, and EMS. These physiotherapy treatments are used to reduce pain, stimulate healing, and improve muscle function. These therapies use sound waves or electrical stimulation to create beneficial physiological effects within the body’s tissues.
At Flaman Physiotherapy, these treatments are often used alongside other physiotherapy techniques to support recovery from injury and improve comfort during rehabilitation.
Ultrasound Therapy in Physiotherapy
Ultrasound therapy stimulates tissues beneath the skin using very high frequency sound waves typically ranging between 1 million and 5 million Hz.
The ultrasound waves are produced by a device called a sound head that vibrates at a selected frequency and transfers energy into the tissues.
How Ultrasound Treatment Works
During treatment a physiotherapist places the sound head against the skin over the injured area. A special gel is applied to ensure effective transmission of the sound waves and to prevent friction.
Ultrasound application causes:
Increased tissue temperature
Improved blood circulation
Enhanced cellular activity
Increased uptake of nutrients and fluids

Phonophoresis
(Medication Delivery)
Ultrasound therapy may also be used for phonophoresis, a process where ultrasound helps increase the absorption of certain medications through the skin.
If your doctor has prescribed a medication to be used in this manner, we can assist with the process.
Conditions Treatable with Ultrasound
Ultrasound is extremely useful for cases where there is significant swelling, with clients literally able to see a difference in the area after even one session. At Flaman Physiotherapy, we use it for treating swelling and inflammation and helping improve blood flow in injuries such as:
Tendonitis
Bursitis
Ligament injuries
Soft tissue injuries
Joint sprains
Scar tissue adhesions
Arthritis

Chronic Back Pain

Neck Pain

Sciatica

Shoulder Pain
How Long Ultrasound Treatments Last
Typical treatment durations include:
Low intensity pulsed ultrasound: 12–15 minutes
Higher intensity continuous ultrasound: 3–8 minutes
TENS Therapy (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)
TENS therapy uses electrical stimulation delivered through electrodes placed on the skin to reduce pain signals in the nervous system. At Flaman Physiotherapy, we use this in conjunction with our other treatment methods to help control pain and discomfort from your injury to allow you to participate in rehabilitation activities.
Ultrasound and Electrotherapy as part of your physiotherapy regime.
These therapies are often combined to treat many musculoskeletal conditions such as
EMS therapy stimulates muscles directly using electrical impulses that create controlled muscular contractions.
Relax tight muscles
Break down scar tissue adhesions
Restore joint motion
Improve circulation
Reduce pain through desensitization
Flaman Physiotherapy uses EMS on many types of injury in conjunction with our other treatment methods, often making the overall treatment session more effective in terms of pain management, joint mobility, and muscle extensibility achieved.

EMS are used in Conjunction with :
Biomechanical Therapy
Exercise Rehabilitation
